Good afternoon, everyone:
Dementia is a general term for a decline in cognitive function. Dementia effects memory, thinking, language, judgement and behavior. It is usually chronic or progressive and more common in older people but not exclusive to them. The effects of dementia can be devastating for those individuals who are affected as well as their caregivers.
Therefore, it is my honor to support the efforts of the Dementia Spotlight Foundation. This wonderful organization provides dementia resources, education and community for those living with dementia and their care partners.
My office recently allocated $27,300 of my discretionary funds to stand up a Memory Café which provides activities and a sense of community for those effected by dementia and their caregivers. It is being executed at the East Central DeKalb Community & Senior Center. On October 11, it was my great privilege to attend a session. I was very impressed and deeply moved by what I witnessed. Out of respect for the privacy of the participants I did not take any pictures.
I would just like to take this opportunity to commend and thank the program leaders that I met that day:
Alyss Amster, Associate Executive Director & Café Program Director
Lynn Ross, Social Worker & Café Program Assistant
Whitney Oeltmann, Co-Founder & Executive Director
These wonderful people are engaged in amazing work. And I am very grateful for their service.
And for those who suffer from this condition and their caregivers, you also have my heartfelt respect and gratitude for your resilience and courage.
I hope that other leaders in DeKalb County will feel compelled to support this effort as well.
On a different note, I took advantage of the opportunity to early vote yesterday at the Clarkston Library. The process went very smoothy, so if you can, please take advantage of this opportunity.
I just want to thank and commend the poll workers that I met yesterday for their service. My gratitude extends to all election workers in DeKalb County, the State of Georgia, and across this country. These are indeed challenging times. And I respect their commitment to public service.
If you have questions or concerns, please call my office at 404-371-4749, visit my website at commissionerbradshaw.com, or use the link at the bottom of this email to Report an Issue.
As always, thank you to the citizens of District 4 and DeKalb County for affording me this opportunity to serve. It is indeed an honor.
